God's Math
Do you like math? Honestly, I don't. I got through Algebra 1 and Geometry in high school, and Statistics and Nature of Math (don't laugh!) in college, but it took a lot of work, and it isn't something I miss.
However, I have discovered some principles that I call "God's Math" that I do like.
They come from a few verses:
John 10:10 says, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life and have it to the full (some version say "more abundantly" - NIV)
So here is how it breaks down:
God 's Math - Adding and multiplying. God adds to our lives good things (blessings, opportunities, growth) and trials sometimes to refine us and build our faith. He also takes whatever gifts (whether our time, abilities, or material possessions) we offer to Him and multiplies their effect and fruitfulness.
He does sometimes call us to give up some things, but those may be things that prevent us from growing more like Him, or things that may not be in our best in the long run. This happens to help us grow stronger spiritually.
Satan's Math - Subtracting and dividing. This is NOT God's math. Satan wants to steal (subtract) things from us (our faith, our joy, our potential, our relationships, and so on). He also attempts to divide or separate God's people from Him and each other. He loves arguments, gossip, strife, and everything else that causes divisions.
He hates unity because it reflects the Trinity of God. And, our unity with God and each other is how the world will know and believe in Jesus (John 17:21). He definitely does not want that.
