A Clearer Image

One of the biggest challenges people face is to know and believe the truth about themselves. As children, we develop a sense of who we are by the words and actions our families express to us. Later on, friends, teachers, and coaches can influence how we see ourselves. As we move into adulthood, sometimes we may look to our spouse, our jobs, or our talents to give us the sense of identity that we long to have.

Part of the problem, I think, comes when we either try to meet up to an impossible image (as in what the media portrays as beautiful or successful) or we compare ourselves to others and find that we (in our own eyes) fall short.

A friend of mine who is a middle school teacher recently mentioned that she and some of the staff had found a message scrawled on a stall door in the girls' bathroom that said "I hate myself".  How sad. But the good news is that my friend and her fellow teachers were in the girl's bathroom to do a little decorating with positive messages to encourage the girls to see themselves in more positive ways.

Sometimes the problem lies in us accepting the reality of who we are. That truth can be hard to accept, too. We are all broken. We do fall short. We all do stupid and hurtful things to others at times. But, the good news is we are never too far gone to be loved by God, even as He sees us and knows us completely (the good, the bad, and the ugly). And yet He loves us completely.

Have you accepted the gift of His love, grace, and forgiveness that is available through faith in the death and resurrection of God's Son, Jesus Christ? He did it for you and me to bridge the gap that our sin and brokenness created between us and Him. He also promises that as we get to know Him better and start to see ourselves through His eyes, we will have a clearer image that accurately reflects the truth.

Blessings.
