Shelter in the Storms
Wow, here in Michigan we have been getting a lot of rain lately. Some pretty good storms, too. Have you ever been caught outdoors in one? Rain is pouring down, thunder's booming overhead, and your clothes are soaked to the skin. You're wet and cold and miserable. The one thing on your mind is to find shelter - fast.
There are storms in life, too. People lose their cool and yell at each other. Friends take things we say the wrong way and it all seems to blow up. Things that looked really promising suddenly fall through. Or life heats up and we find ourselves in a virtual storm of responsibilities and deadlines that swamp us. Have you ever been there?
Often on days like this I find I want to crawl back in bed and hide under the covers. Like today. But life doesn't always accommodate my desire. So what to do? First, we need to come in out of the rain. Find a place to come in, dry off, and sit down... and catch your breath. Maybe it means putting aside reading the e-mails and text messages to have a few minutes to just be quiet. Maybe have a cup of tea. Warm up those insides. Better yet, how about some food for your soul - a few verses to lift your spirit.
Here's a couple that are sure to warm your heart as they did mine.
"I love you, Lord, my strength... my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold." Psalm 18:1-2
"You are my strength, I sing praise to you; you, God, are my fortress, my God on whom I can rely." Psalm 59:17
"Trust in him at all times, you people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge." Psalm 62:8
He is the one we can depend on when the storms of life surround us. We can come to him to find shelter and warmth, peace and calm. We can pour out our hearts to him, and in doing this, find that he is indeed our "shelter in the time of storm".
Blessings.
